Caller to Craig Computers:  “Hi, this is **** from Socket (a Mid-Missouri ISP) I need to speak with Todd.”

Terry: “Todd is busy on a call, how may I help you?”

from Socket: “Well this is in regards to a customer needs help with a static IP.”

Terry: “Is there a number you would like Todd to call you back on?”

from Socket (with kind of an arrogant tone):  “Well 1-800-SOCKET3”

Terry (with a matter of fact tone): “Sorry, you’re going to have to give me the number. “

from Socket: “1-800- uh, 7, (pause) 6, uh  2, (pause) 5, uh 3, uh 8, (pause) 3”

When Terry told me about this, it made me chuckle and reminded me of how I need to make sure that I wouldn’t expect my customers to jump through hoops that I wouldn’t be happy about as a customer.  Or make sure I would “Eat my own dog food”.

On Socket’s behalf, they have redone their marketing and recently taken away their push of “1-800-socket3” and now offer the numbers.  I have enjoyed working with them over the years and would recommend them as an option for a local ISP.  ~Todd

Sadly, we had yet another customer come in that had been to three other “computer techs” or “PC techs” or whatever self-given title they want to use, and had spent a considerable amount of money, has a new part (they didn’t need) and still has the same problem (and worse actually) that they had when they started.

Well thank goodness they are here now, I opened the case and within 20 seconds, seen visually what was causing these issues.  A visual inspection is a fundamental thing a certified, trained, experienced technician will do before wasting everyone’s time, effort and money… keep in mind that these “techs” are charging big bucks for this too.  -Shame.

I hope this doesn’t come as a shock to anyone.  But I found it interesting that the big providers have such disparity in protocol/policy.
