Welcome to Earth…
I was on a call and it was one of those situations where the company hired out their IT, then the management changed and IT and the old manager blew town with all and I mean ALL of the documentation, software… well everything.
Here we are trying to access a server without a password. Okay, so I can deal with that. It was helpful that the username was populated from the last log on and it was Administrator. It is Windows and I can use Linux and a tool to get to SAM and get in. So we are in… I was able to work on a few things. Last item on the list, secure this application. Then we are at a web-based application with an off-site database. Here we sit looking at two blank fields Username and Password. Of course, nothing works that we have discovered.
The new manager looks at me and says “Okay, use one of your ‘lockpicks’ on this and figure the password out”. I tried to explain to him that there was no magic tool available and that it wasn’t a movie but real-life. He looked at me like I was lying and he was highly mad.
My point is… don’t watch Swordfish and think that stuff is anywhere close to real world. Come back to planet Earth or for you first-timers “Welcome to Earth”.
